dickey:
founder & creative director

dickey's mission during his 20-year career as a hairstylist has been to dispel myths about beauty that are deeply rooted in historical and social experiences. dickey feels the issues surrounding textured hair should be less about social division and more about defining standards and products so that the mainstream perception about beauty can evolve and reflect the real world.

mastering the mystery of textured hair, dickey has created iconic hairstyles for designers, advertisers, photographers and celebrities alike. sarah jessica parker, minnie driver, alicia keys, kelis, and andre 3000 are just a few of the notables he has styled. he has contributed editorial imagery to magazines including vogue, vanity fair, essence, vibe, the new york times magazine, glamour, and allure.

his work at world-class salons such as oribe, louis licari, and john frieda, where his clients ranged from high-powered executives to stay-at-home moms, further refined his technical wizardry. it was during this time that dickey discovered a universal truth shared by all women with textured hair: women with kinky, curly and wavy hair have had to compromise. whether through product choices or services prescribed by professionals to manipulate their hair into behaving a certain way, these women compromise – both literally and figuratively – time and time again.

because of a lack of understanding by the hair-care industry on how to properly and healthily manage textured hair, and to empower the consumer, dickey authored hair rules!: the ultimate hair care guide for women with kinky, curly and wavy hair, pioneering a new standard of hair care and styling solutions for a multi-textural world.

inspired by the success of his book and the enthusiastic response from women around the world, dickey launched hair rules, a solutions-oriented line of cleansers, conditioning treatments and styling aids specifically geared to the special needs of kinky, curly and wavy hair. his hope is to encourage people, once and for all, to embrace their natural beauty.

kara young georgiopolous
co-founder

kara young georgiopoulous is the co-founder of hair rules hair care and styling solutions for a multi-textural world. as such, she lends creative inspiration and insight to this solutions-oriented line of cleansers, conditioning treatments and styling aids specifically geared to the special needs of kinky, curly and wavy hair, which she co-conceived with her friend, celebrity and session stylist, anthony dickey.

most recently, kara - who was among the fashion world's top models in the late 1980s and 1990s - enjoyed a stint as entertainment news correspondent for fox news channel, where she interviewed the likes of rod stewart, angela bassett, sarah jessica parker, molly shannon, edward burns and ed norton among other hollywood a-listers.

but, kara's true claim to fame came for more than a decade, from 1988 to1998, when she appeared in some of the most provocative and memorable advertising campaigns for global cosmetic giants, maybelline, loreal and victoria's secret. in 1989, kara was photographed by richard avedon for revlon's "most unforgettable women" campaign, alongside supermodels christy turlington, cindy crawford and claudia schiffer. she continued on in print and tv campaigns for revlon for the next 10 years.

concurrently, kara did a slew of editorial assignments, including sports illustrated's coveted swimsuit issue in 1991. she worked frequently in both the us and abroad, including japan, milan, london and paris, and was featured on countless magazine covers for vogue, elle, glamour and cosmopolitan.

one day in 1990, while working on a shoot for american vogue with photographer steven meisel, hairstylist kevin mancuso and makeup artist, kevin aucoin, they all begged her to have her hair done professionally before future shoots. it simply required too much time to take her soaking wet head of coarse, curly hair to done on the day-of the shoot.

they introduced her to anthony dickey, who over time, helped nurture her otherwise fraught hair back to health, while encouraging her to celebrate and appreciate her natural texture. a devoted friendship ensued and the rest is history. kara lives in new york city with her husband, businessman peter georgiopoulous, and their two children.
