DO IT YOURSELF BLOW OUTS
Everything You Need To Know About At-Home Hair Drying
From Texture Guru and Celebrity Stylist Dickey

No style is more elusive to real women than the coveted salon blowout. Texture expert and stylist to the stars Dickey knows that women striving to achieve the style they want come up against obstacles all too often and can spend hours struggling to recreate the stylist's quintessential blowout at home. Powered by this information, the Hair Rules team created the Blow Out line – three stylers that combine the best that science and nature have to offer by fusing together unique macromolecules and polymers with ingredients like ginger, awapuhi, and honey to help women achieve the ultimate texture-specific blowout.

For women with textured hair, blow drying opens up a world of styling options. It begins by choosing the right styler for your hair – Blow Out Your Curls, Blow Out Your Kinks, or Blow Out Your Waves. Each product in the Blow Out line is formulated with the specific needs of each texture in mind. They offer women of all textures and types the chance to experiment with styling without the damage—or commitment—of harsh, permanent processes.

DOING IT YOURSELF:

For Wavy to Straight Textures:
Begin by applying Hair Rules Blow Out Your Waves, formulated with good-for-you ingredients like lemongrass and hydrolyzed wheat protein. "Before you begin blowdrying, hair should be at least 80% dry. Squeeze out any excess water by hand; don't rub hair dry with a towel, as it promotes frizz," warns Dickey. Using a nozzle on the end of your dryer, which will direct the heat where you want it, stretch sections of the hair smooth with a natural-bristle brush. "An alternative method is to dry the hair almost completely with a comb attachment, then follow up with a large barrel curling iron that's the same size as your round brush," says Dickey. "It will give you the same voluminous look, but will require slightly less drying time."

For Kinky and Curly Textures:
"For kinky and curly textures, which are often the most fragile textures, it's essential that you're applying the right products prior to heat styling, so that the blowdryer will burn off the product, not your hair's natural oils," suggests Dickey. The curlier and coarser your hair is, the wetter it should be before you begin drying. Apply Blow Out Your Kinks or Blow Out Your Curls to soaking wet hair. "If your hair is kinky, a blow-dryer with a comb attachment for pulling out the tightly wound coils should be your appliance of choice," says Dickey. Use the same method of drying section by section, but use a comb attachment, which will help detangle curly and kinky hair as it dries.

"If done right, a good blowout should last anywhere from four to six days," Dickey reveals. "Sleep with a satin scarf or pillow cover over your freshly blown out hair – the satin will slide over the hair without absorbing its natural oils, which can cause it to dry out, mat, and tangle. To maintain the smooth look of your blowout overnight, put hair in a high, loose bun at the crown and secure it with a piece of cloth — not an elastic, which will tear the hair while you toss and turn."
